Walking in the Air, Installation view at Colliderscape exhibition at A.P.T Gallery, March, 2016

Nicki Rolls works with film, painting, drawing and installation to produce works which explore cinematic and virtual worlds and the tension which arises between the natural world and its appropriation by technological process. She seeks to interrupt and break down this process, attempting to wrest the image from the grasp of technology. In a series of paintings, drawings and videos, she has plundered early Disney animation films, especially Bambi, reconstructing its kitsch imagery within the bounds of computer generated geometric pattern or areas of void, empty space. She is investigating the construction of virtual space and its propensity to exploit our emotions, to both invite and repel within the vast remotness, rigour and coolness of computer generated simulation. and exploring what it is to be a spectator in a digital age.
